Bacteria Monitoring Resumes for 2023

Example PRKN bacteria monitoring results found on the Swim Guide website (https://www.theswimguide.org/affiliates/potomac-riverkeeper-network/, last accessed 6/20/23)

Monitoring of bacteria (e. coli) in streams resumed this spring in partnership with Potomac Riverkeeper Network (PRKN). Conducted by trained volunteers on Wednesday mornings, the sampling occurs on two different schedules at several locations:

  • Weekly at 10 sites total along the Potomac River (6 sites) and Antietam Creek (4 sites) coordinated by PRKN

  • Monthly at 5 or more additional sites within the Antietam watershed coordinated by ACWA & Beaver Creek Watershed Alliance

Weekly results for PRKN sampling sites are posted publicly on the Swim Guide website to help guide the community in understanding bacteria trends when accessing and recreating in local waters. (Learn more in this 2022 article: Safe Swimming and Creek Bacteria) Bacteria monitoring will continue until September when recreation typically ends for the season.
