Meet the Eastern Wild Turkey

The Eastern Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) is the only North American turkey species that resides in Maryland. The male turkeys are called gobblers, which is ironic because around this time of year is when we humans gobble them down. This species can be found in all parts of the state of Maryland, near forests and like environments. Eastern Wild Turkeys eat leaves, acorns, seeds, buds, and insects as well as small frogs and slugs. During mating season, the males can be very aggressive and use their calls to try and attract females and assert dominance over subordinate males. When scared, the turkeys will almost always run, but they can fly up to 50 miles per hour over short distances.
