October 28, 2023 11-12:30; Doors open at 10:15 for social and to view the Event Center displays
at the Beaver Creek School Event Center, 9702 Beaver Creek Church Road, Hagerstown
Co-hosted by ACWA and the Beaver Creek Watershed Association, this Community Outreach Meeting is free and open to the public. ACWA and our partners will provide updates on issues in our watersheds and upcoming volunteer stewardship events.
Guest speaker, Alison Zak, Founder & Executive Director of the Human-Beaver Coexistence Fund will provide a presentation on the benefits Beavers have to our environment and how humans can coexist with them with less frustration. Learn tips on how to identify Beavers and reasons why our watersheds need them.
After the meeting, take a short walk to visit a local beaver dam on Beaver Creek (weather permitting). The walk is along paved country road to the stream, then along the vegetated stream trail to the dam, returning the same route (total distance ~0.5 miles). Please wear closed toe sturdy shoes that could get muddy depending on trail conditions.
Ms. Zak studied human-wildlife conflict in graduate school, then worked for 6 years in environmental education before founding the Human-Beaver Coexistence Fund. She is particularly intrigued by beaver coexistence work, because few other animals have such an impact on the world around them. Alison holds a BA (University of South Florida) and MA (San Diego State University) in Anthropology. She is the author of Wild Asana: Animals, Yoga, and Connecting Our Practice to the Natural World.
