ACWA 2024 Speaker Series Presents:
Wildlife Corridors: A Response to Climate Change & Biodiversity Loss in Maryland’s Appalachian Heart
with Karen Russell, Founder of the Climate Change Working Group of Frederick County.
One consequence of population growth has been the loss and fragmentation of habitat on which many plants and animals depend. Add to this local challenge the global one of climate change. Many plants and animals that we know and treasure are in trouble. Their habitats are changing and their food sources are, in some cases, disappearing.
Frederick county and neighboring Washington county lie within the broader Appalachian mountain landscape. The Appalachian Mountains represent the most connected landscape and the most heavily travelled wildlife migration corridor in North America. Creating contiguous wildlife corridors, such as an Appalachian Climate Corridor, connects fragmented habitat and facilitates species movement to ensure continued biodiversity in the changing natural systems on which survival depends.
