Meet the Green Sunfish

The Green Sunfish (Lepomis Cyanellus) is a smaller fish, native to the United States, commonly found in the Rockies to the Appalachian Mountains and throughout Maryland. Like its name suggests, this fish has a dark green body with faint color bars running up its side. The green sunfish is able to withstand a plethora of environmental conditions and breed lots of offspring, both of which make it a good repopulator for when other species in a certain habitat deplete. The green sunfish is considered an invasive species by the states of Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, and New Jersey, and its behavior in the water can be quite aggressive, especially during mating season. The sunfish is an omnivore and eats mainly aquatic insects, small fish, fish eggs, and plant material. The habitat that the Green Sunfish prefers to live in is lakes, ponds, and streams that have gravel/sand bottoms. They spend most of their time hiding under the cover of rocks or leaves.
