Plant I.D. for Priority Seed Workshops


Plant Species list as priority by the MD State Tree Nursery include:

  • American Plum

  • Black Chokeberry

  • Chinkapin Oak

  • Eastern Red Cedar

  • Flowering Dogwood

  • Hazel Alder

  • Red Chokeberry

  • Redbud

  • Speckled Alder

  • Spicebush

  • White Oak

  • Witch hazel

The Maryland State Tree Nursery has identified 15 species of native trees and shrubs from which they need seeds collected. Learn how to identify these priority plant species to help with collection efforts this fall.

Led by Anna Twigg, MD-Forest Service Tree Planting Specialist

Free to anyone who want to learn how to identify plants for fall seed collection efforts.

Workshop Dates

•NOW August 21 - City Park, Hagerstown 5:30 pm

•August 13th - Washington Monument State Park 9am

Field trip(s) to scout for priority plants

•August 29th - Mt Briar Wetland Reserve, Rohrersville - Time TBD

•other locations may be scheduled

We will provide:

  • Handout on identifying Maryland priority plant species

  • Directions on how to use online tools to share locations of priority species with us.

  • Details on how to collect seeds this fall and upcoming group seed collection events.

  • Seed collection supplies and labels for individual collection

  • What to bring:

    • Mobile device or camera

    • Tree/plant ID book, if you have a favorite but not required.

    • Personal notebook

    • Binoculars, optional

    • Drinking water
